Gardners Word – plot 18b

Allotment progress, plans and ideas

This is a record of my allotment journey, with plenty of photos and notes along the way. I’ll share what worked, what didn’t, what I learn, and the ideas I want to carry into the next season and coming years.

I’m aiming to grow as much good food as I can while working with nature, using organic and no-dig methods. Making compost is a big part of that, feeding the soil and supporting the huge amount of life within it, from fungi and microbes to worms and all the other creatures that help keep the ground healthy and productive.

Mid October 2025 – The allotment…this may take some time to clear, but I have plans and a vision… and a bit of help, thank goodness!

6x18m plot with shoulder high (to little 5′ me) nettles. I contemplated how to start after being somewhat overwhelmed by the decision I’d made to take this particular plot on. I hate using strimmers (mainly because of the cutting wildlife capabilities of them) and the job required needed one. We don’t have electric here so my strimmer was ruled out straight away which did not sadden me. I do, however, have a battery operated hedge-trimmer – this will do the job nicely, and less viciously.
First job was to cut the end of season nettles down by over half and rake off debris, then, with the battery operated mower set on high, and doing a wheely, go over the nettle stumps progressively lower. We don’t know what we’ll find under all this growth and definitely don’t want to damage the mower (my third best friend after the hedge-trimmer and husband) because we have so much more to do.
